Jack, this week American families will receive checks in the mail thanks to the hard work that Democrats did earlier this year passing American Rescue Plan.

Now, we have a historic opportunity to make this federal child tax credit permanent as Congress finalizes what will or won't be part of the multi-trillion dollar infrastructure plan.

The child tax credit—which was included in the American Rescue Plan—pays each family up to $3,600 a year per child under six (or $300/month) or $3,000 a year per child between the ages of 6-17. A study at Columbia University showed doing so permanently would cut child poverty in half—and would directly benefit nearly ten million children, including 2.3 million Black children, 4.1 million Latino children, and 441,000 Asian American children.

But it only applies for one year. If made permanent, a Child Tax Credit could begin a new era in the fight against child poverty in the United States, using federal dollars to lift millions of families out of poverty. We can be the generation of Americans that made child poverty a shadow of its former self.

As Congress finalizes what will or won't be in the American Jobs and Families Plan, now is the moment for us to fight hard to make the federal child tax credit permanent.
