"It's been referred to as a civil death to be placed under conservatorship ... where you live, what medical care you get, your reproductive freedom, all of those are taken from you and given to another person." – Zoe Brennan-Krohn, in our latest At Liberty episode

ACLU Supporter, just yesterday, the ACLU, along with our affiliate and partners, filed an amicus brief in support of Britney Spears' right to select her own attorney for her conservatorship proceedings. Her case has catapulted conservatorship into public consciousness. But her experience is not the exception: An estimated over one million other Americans with disabilities live under some form of conservatorship.

Why is this still happening? And can the system be changed?

In the latest from our At Liberty podcast, ACLU staff attorney Zoe Brennan-Krohn breaks down the issue – from its horrific and discriminatory history in the eugenics movement to its anti-civil liberties incarnation today.

It's the first of several episodes to come for Disability Pride Month, so check it out today.
