Hi friend,

Looking to build power and make change in your community? The NHRC Policy + Advocacy Community engagement toolkit, " It's Our Backyard Too: Building Community-Centered Support for Harm Reduction" is a comprehensive, community-informed online course for everyone, regardless of organizing and harm reduction background. This course is free in order to provide resources to every person who uses drugs, trades sex, loves someone who uses drugs or trades sex, does harm reduction work, wants to know more about harm reduction work, is a provider at a syringe service program (SSP)/syringe access program (SAP), and all of our comrades who sit at the intersections of justice for our communities.

In the It's Our Backyard Too: Building Community-Centered Support for Harm Reduction, you will learn about:

-Identifying, exploring, and developing personal and community values
-The origin and future of intersectionality
-Community building, power mapping, and asset mapping
-Applying Harm Reduction principles to other movement spaces
-The intersection of Abolition and Harm Reduction
-Centering Sex Workers in Harm Reduction
-Combating Not In My Backyard -ism (NIMBYism)
-Working with elected officials
-Legislative advocacy & budget advocacy
-Promoting racial equity in organizing spaces
-Stories from the field highlighting major wins for harm reduction

You will be given:

-Pre/post survey to reflect on the knowledge and confidence you develop throughout the course
-Individual journaling and reflection prompts
-Group discussion question space to talk to other Harm Reductionists
-Downloadable PDF resources
-Downloadable Handouts and Group activities
-Transcripts of all recordings and videos
3 live sessions:
Harm Reduction Our Way: A Live Values Exploration with NHRC & Trystereo (Thursday, July 15th @ 3 PM PST/6 PM EST)
Stories From the Field: Shifting Material Resources Towards Harm Reduction ( Thursday, July 22nd @ 1 PM PST/4 PM EST)
Toolkit Wrap-Up: Community-Curated Q+A about all things toolkit & future versions ( Thursday, September 2nd @ 1 PM PST/4 PM EST)
And much more!

At the end of the toolkit, you will be primed to identify your values, put those values into practice, build support for Harm Reduction in your community, and formulate your own best practices. This toolkit is a living document that will continue to be developed and added to over the coming months. Be sure to check back for more modules, take what you learned back to your community, and share the toolkit with your networks!
