Friend – I’m Gail Schwartz, chair of Ban Assault Weapons NOW. Before Feb. 14, 2018, I had become numb to the ever too frequent mass shootings on the news. Like most people, I believed that it could never happen to my family.

But later that day, I got the call that my 14-year-old nephew, Alex, had been murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with a military-grade assault weapon – and my world changed forever.

Just six days after the horrific shooting, the Florida Legislature voted against a ban on assault weapons like the one used to devastate my family and my community. That's when I knew I had to do something.

I turned my grief into action and started Ban Assault Weapons NOW – and today, our work has never been more urgent: We're on a mission to elect gun safety champions to the Florida Legislature, defeat the NRA and ban assault weapons once and for all.

Time and again, our NRA-backed lawmakers have chosen politics over action and campaign checks over their constituents. If we want to make real change and stop our children from being murdered, we have to elect those who are committed to banning these weapons of war. But we can't do it alone.
