John,
Today is Indigenous Peoples Day.
While we use the day to honor and celebrate Indigenous people, remember that atrocities against Indigenous peoples around the globe continue to this very day.
In Brazil, the Mura indigenous tribe is fighting to save the Amazon rainforest — their home — from deforestation and destruction. 1
In the United States, we’ve had a crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women for many years. Native women in some tribal communities are killed at a rate 10 times the national average, but there is a lack of investment to solve these heinous crimes at all levels. 2
Indigenous people in the US also face more social, economic, and political barriers to a decent life than any other group of people in society.
Sadly, Indigenous people are still treated like second class citizens on land that is rightfully theirs.
When I’m in Congress, I will work in close consultation with Indigenous leaders to fight for greater federal support for the resources tribes need to provide a decent life for all members.
While we can’t undo the past, we can apologize to Indigenous people for governmentally endorsed and perpetuated cultural genocide and commit to stop policies that continue to cause harm.
It's our moral duty to put First People first.
