Democrats got some fantastic news out of Kentucky last week: Charles Booker officially announced that he is running to unseat Sen. Rand Paul.
John, we've written to you about Rand Paul before. He is undoubtedly one of the most radical, far-right figures in the Republican Party. He's spread racist conspiracy theories about the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, blocked the creation of a federal anti-lynching law, and consistently voted to cut vital services that Americans depend on to survive. Rand Paul has been a failure at every aspect of his job as a senator from Kentucky.
Charles Booker, on the other hand, is an unapologetic, bold progressive. He is focused on bringing progressive priorities like criminal justice reform, affordable health care, and a Green New Deal to Washington. On top of that, he came within 2 points of challenging Mitch McConnell in 2020, meaning he already has a base of supporters to build his campaign around. Booker is going to continue to build a winning coalition of voters from every corner of Kentucky -- or, as he likes to say, “from the hood to the holler.”
That's the kind of leadership we need now more than ever. But we won't lie to you -- this will be an uphill battle. Booker has progressive champions like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on his side, but Rand Paul secured Donald Trump's endorsement, and the money is flowing in.
