Later this week Myrna Pérez, President Biden’s extraordinarily qualified nominee to the prestigious Second Circuit Court of Appeals, will have her confirmation hearing in the Senate. With decades of experience as both a litigator and a legal academic, as well as a career spent protecting and advocating for voting rights, Pérez is the ideal candidate to fill this key seat on the federal appeals court.
With hundreds of judicial vacancies on our federal courts, it’s imperative that the Senate confirm Pérez to the Second Circuit quickly, particularly as Trump’s unqualified and shamelessly partisan judges continue to wreak havoc on our judicial system. The progress of our country depends on the Senate confirming exemplary judicial candidates like Pérez without delay.
Pérez has dedicated her whole career to making sure that our democracy remains strong and to protecting our freedom to vote. And with Latinos only making up eight percent of active federal judges – despite the fact that they represent almost 20 percent of the U.S. population – her lived experiences as a Latina woman will provide a sorely needed perspective on our courts.
We need judges who will deliver equal justice for all and who will protect the rights of every person. With her extensive legal expertise and demonstrated commitment to civil and human rights, I know that Myrna Pérez will be that judge.
Now more than ever our judiciary needs her deep understanding of the law and its impact on peoples’ lives; the Senate must confirm her right away.
