Let’s play Jeopardy!
Category:
Voter Suppression for $600.
Clue:
Don’t mess with this state, where it is harder to vote than anywhere else in America.
Response:
What is Texas?
That’s right, the Lone Star State by many estimates makes it harder for its citizens to exercise their right to vote than any other state in the country.
But Texas’ Republican-dominated Legislature and Trumpist Governor are obsessed with making it even harder for people of color, residents of large cities, and others to vote.
- They are pretending to be concerned about “fraud.”
- But of course the reality is that election fraud is all but non-existent.
- What Republicans in Texas — and in many, many other states — are doing is using the myth of election fraud (including the Big Lie that the 2020 election was “stolen” from Donald Trump) to push racist and anti-democratic voting restrictions that disproportionately and intentionally impact Democratic-leaning voters.
- In May, Texas Democrats collectively walked out of the State Capitol on the final day of the legislative session, thereby leaving too few legislators present to hold a vote.
- So the Trumpist governor forced the Texas Legislature to reconvene in a special session for the purpose of jamming these voting restrictions through.
In an extraordinarily bold move to protect democracy from Republican attacks, a large contingent of Democratic legislators in Texas are leaving the state today to once again deny Republicans enough legislators present to hold a vote.
Tell Democrats in the Texas Legislature:
Thank you for standing up for democracy. We urge you to do everything in your power to block racist, anti-democratic voting restrictions in Texas.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
