Friend,
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court -- dominated by conservatives after Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell stacked it against the will of the American people -- issued two rulings that dealt serious setbacks to voting rights and transparency in our politics.
The court upheld a restrictive voting law in Arizona, and in doing so, limited the criteria for future challenges to legislation that makes it harder to vote. At the same time, the court struck down a California law that put donor disclosure requirements in place for dark money groups -- a ruling with clear implications for the rest of the country.
These decisions will degrade our democracy even further. The Supreme Court has given a big flashing green light to right-wing state legislatures across the country crafting voter suppression laws, and they've made it easier for special interest groups to buy elections.
We are not powerless in the face of these rulings. Congress can protect our democracy and get dark money out of politics by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the For the People Act. But here's the problem: any legislation like this will be blocked by Senate Republicans as long as the filibuster remains in place.
Jennifer called for the filibuster to be abolished last month because she understands that the integrity of our democracy and ability to solve problems for the American people matter far more than an outdated Senate rule. The Supreme Court's recent actions have further driven home urgency to act.
So will you join us? We're trying to get an additional 7,500 citizen co-signers on our petition to end the filibuster. Please add your name today >>
