John, did you know that most American families will begin receiving monthly payments of $250 to $300 per child this week thanks to the expanded Child Tax Credit?

It’s estimated that this measure will cut child poverty nearly in half, and I’m so proud that Democrats fought for its inclusion in the American Rescue Plan.

But as co-chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, I’m focused on more than just ending child poverty in the United States — I’m also working to address our child care crisis by demanding robust investments in our child care infrastructure.

Over 90% of American child care workers are women — disproportionately, women of color — but despite the exorbitant costs of child care, those women are often earning poverty wages with no benefits.

In the wealthiest country on earth there is no excuse for children to live in poverty and no excuse for child care workers to live in poverty.

Just as we invest in roads and bridges for our economy to function, we must robustly invest in the child care system. That means ensuring child care workers receive a living wage with benefits and ensuring that no family pays more for child care than 7% of their family's income.
