John

Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics just a few weeks away, U.S. Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was disqualified from competing by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for cannabis use.

I’ve said it before — cannabis should be legalized. That goes for medical and recreational use, including for athletes in their private lives.

If you agree that the USADA should stop including cannabis as a prohibited substance and allow athletes like Sha’Carri to compete, sign your name onto my petition: [[link removed]?]

Cannabis is even legal for medical and recreational use in the state of Oregon, where the Olympic trials took place.

The USADA’s inclusion of cannabis as a prohibited substance is an outdated and restrictive rule. It is also a reminder of our country’s cruel, failed War on Drugs — especially since cannabis lacks any scientific evidence as a performance-enhancing substance or competitive advantage.

The Olympics offer the unique opportunity to showcase our best and brightest athletes once every four years. We should not let an outdated, misguided rule deprive deserving athletes of competing at the highest level.

Add your name if you agree the USADA should roll back its cannabis restriction and let all our best athletes compete for what they’ve earned. [[link removed]?]

As Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Cannabis Caucus, I know that ending the War on Drugs means speaking out against unjust cannabis policy wherever we find it.

Thank you for raising your voice against this unjust policy alongside me.

In solidarity,

Barbara Lee
