John,
On Friday afternoon, President Biden fired Trump’s hand-picked Social Security Administration Commissioner Andrew Saul and his Trump-appointed deputy, David Black.
As the White House noted in its statement, this firing was well-earned:1
Since taking office, Commissioner Saul has undermined and politicized Social Security disability benefits, terminated the agency’s telework policy that was utilized by up to 25 percent of the agency’s workforce, not repaired SSA’s relationships with relevant Federal employee unions including in the context of COVID-19 workplace safety planning, reduced due process protections for benefits appeals hearings, and taken other actions that run contrary to the mission of the agency and the President’s policy agenda.
Without the tireless advocacy of Social Security Works members, this would not have happened. The Biden-Harris administration has a lot on its plate, but together, we could not be ignored.
This is a victory for seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone who plans to retire one day. It is worth celebrating.
Next, we’re going to fight to ensure that the next Social Security Commissioner is one who believes in the promise of our Social Security system, and will work to deliver the world-class service that Americans deserve from our government.
