Law Enforcement News Woman Killed, Man Wounded In Hyde Park Car-to-Car Shooting A woman was killed and a man was wounded early Monday when someone in another vehicle fired shots as they drove in their vehicle, causing them to crash in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles. The shooting was reported at 1:48 a.m. at Brynhurst and Florence avenues, Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. L. Hoffman told City News Service. The victims’ vehicle crashed at Brynhurst Avenue, she said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to LAPD Officer Lizeth Lomeli. The man was taken to a hospital by paramedics, and had stable vital signs. Both victims were between the ages of 20 and 25, police said. No suspect description was available. MyNewsLA.com Police Search For Westchester Shooting Suspect A suspect in a shooting that took place near Westchester Park that left at least one person injured Friday night is still at large, according to the LAPD. The shooting took place around 9 p.m. near Manchester Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue - the same location two men were wounded during a shooting in early May. Westchester Park is also home to Bonin's westside Council District 11 office. Police said they believe the Friday night shooting--as well as the May shooting-- was gang-related. According to one neighbor in the area, kids were playing in a backyard when they heard a ping from a shell that bounced off their gutter. Violent crime in the area is rising along with encampments, a statistic noted by the Pacific Division Police Department and Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore. Last June, Moore told the Police Commission that the city had experienced a 50 percent increase in shooting victims compared to the same period last year. Moore also said that overall violent crime and aggravated assaults had increased with the some of the largest jumps in the Pacific area. Moore added that there is "significant involvement" of homeless people in aggravated assaults, both as victims and as offenders. Venice Current Male Fatally Stabbed Outside Westlake Liquor Store A person was stabbed to death Sunday evening outside a Westlake liquor store. The altercation was reported shortly after 9 p.m. at Third Street and Burlington Avenue, according to a dispatcher at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center. The male victim died at the scene, she said. The suspect, believed to be a man in his 20s, ran from the scene, she said. MyNewsLA.com $50K Reward Offered As Search Continues For Driver In Harbor City Crash That Killed 4-Year-Old Girl A $50,000 reward is being offered for information on the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash in Harbor City that killed a 4-year-old girl. Jayda Sanchez, her 5-year-old brother and their father were leaving a park Friday night when a driver in front of them made an illegal U-turn in the 26000 block of South Vermont Avenue. The father swerved to avoid a collision, causing the truck to rollover multiple times and crash into a light pole. Jayda died instantly. Her brother and father remained hospitalized Monday morning. The children's mother, Adriana Rodriguez, on Saturday visited a memorial of candles and balloons set up near the crash scene. She said she can't believe her baby girl is gone. Born premature, she fought to survive only to have her young life cut short by a suspect who left her to die in the streets. The Los Angeles Police Department said the driver of the other vehicle is still at large and a description of the fleeing vehicle was not immediately available. ABC 7 A 60-Year-Old Man Dies After Falling From Bridge In Silver Lake, Police Investigating The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call that reported a person falling an estimated 30 feet from a bridge in the Silver Lake district. The call came in just before 3 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived to the location at 1198 Myra Ave., they discovered a 60-year-old male beyond medical help who died at the scene. It is unknown what circumstances led to the fall, though the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating, according to fire department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. CBS 2 Venice Beach Homeless Move Onto Sand When Rousted During Boardwalk Cleanup City officials in Los Angeles are working to reclaim the world-famous 2-mile boardwalk in Venice Beach that has been commandeered by hundreds of homeless people, but efforts appear to be doomed as thousands more are living on streets within walking distance. As the boardwalk is cleared of trash, hazardous waste, and tents, the homeless are simply moving their living quarters onto the sand, across the street, or elsewhere in this 3-square mile community of prime real estate, said Ira Koslow, the president of the Venice Neighborhood Council’s Board of Directors. “There are empty spaces now, but if you go to the north part, that’s now doubled and jammed,” he said. “They moved from one end to the other, and there’s no repercussions.” After years of resident and business complaints regarding crime, fires, and feces, Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin finally announced a cleanup one week after being served with recall papers. He said 200 homeless would be rehoused. Washington Examiner Man Killed In Domestic Shooting In South L.A.; No Arrests Made A killer is at large after a man was fatally shot in what investigators believe was a domestic incident in South Los Angeles Friday, officials said. The gunfire was reported around 1:40 p.m. near the corner of 90th and Juniper streets in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone neighborhood, said L.A. County sheriff’s Lt. Robert Westphal. Responding deputies found the man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and he died at the scene, Westphal said. Officials described the victim as a Latino man who appeared to be in his 40s. Video from the scene showed the crime scene was centered around a boat sitting on the road that appeared to be used as a makeshift shelter. Several trailers were also parked nearby. Westphal said the victim frequented the area and may have been staying in one of the trailers parked along the street, but was not living in the boat. Although authorities said they were investigating the shooting as domestic, no further details were provided on the nature of the victim’s relationship to the perpetrator. KTLA 5 Authorities Investigating Death Of A Man Whose Body Was Found Near Downtown Los Angeles Sheriff's detectives were investigating the death of a man found in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles Sunday. The body was discovered in the 4500 block of East Second Street. The man was found dead at the scene, Deputy Eric Ortiz said. His name will be withheld pending notification of next of kin. The cause of death was not released by the LASD. Anyone with information on this death was asked to call the LASD's homicide unit at 323-890-5500. NBC 4 San Fernando Valley Men To Be Sentenced For Making, Selling Fake Driver’s Licenses, Green Cards And More Two San Fernando Valley men face federal prison terms Monday morning for participating in a document-trafficking ring that created and sold counterfeit United States passport cards, Social Security cards, driver’s licenses and other documents. Carlos A. Hernandez, 44, of Granada Hills, pleaded guilty in February to one federal count each of conspiracy and being a felon in possession of firearms, and Miguel J. Guerrero, 23, of Van Nuys, pleaded to one count each of conspiracy and producing false identification documents, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The government is asking the judge to sentence Hernandez to 2 1/2 years behind bars and Guerrero to two years. A third defendant, Nestor Perez, 32, of Van Nuys, also pleaded guilty to two federal charges, and is scheduled for sentencing on July 19 in Los Angeles federal court. Los Angeles Daily News Woodland Hills Man Arrested For Identity Theft In LA and Ventura Counties A 32-year-old man from Woodland Hills with a criminal record was arrested after authorities say he committed multiple thefts and identity theft crimes in Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, and Los Angeles County. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says they began an investigation in June after multiple people reported thefts from unlocked cars and open garages in the area of Cresthaven Drive in Thousand Oaks. One victim's wallet was stolen from her car and within hours, the credit cards were used at seven locations in Woodland Hills, according to the sheriff's office. Detectives identified Terry Shook, 32, as the person responsible after obtaining surveillance video. Authorities say Shook was also captured on video breaking into two drop boxes for businesses in Camarillo in the early morning hours of July 4 and stole checks from both locations before depositing them into an account. Shook, who has a warrant for his arrest by the U.S. Marshalls for fraud violation and a felony warrant from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for violation of his Post Release Community Supervision, was arrested on July 7 after the month-long investigation, according to authorities. NBC 4 Man Pleads Guilty To Transporting Teenage Girl From L.A. County Across State Lines To Engage In Prostitution A Stockton man pleaded guilty Friday to a federal criminal charge accusing him of transporting a teenage girl out of state from Los Angeles County so that she could work as a prostitute, officials said. Christian Alexander Augustus, 25, a.k.a. “Sir Ceeco,” pleaded guilty to one count of transportation of a minor in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution and criminal sexual activity, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. In April 2019, Augustus willfully caused the teenager to be transported from L.A. County to Las Vegas with the intent that she would engage in prostitution and other criminal sexual activity, according to his plea agreement. From December 2018 to July 2019, Augustus directed the transportation of the victim from L.A. and Orange counties to locations including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix, where she worked as a prostitute for his financial benefit, the news release states. Augustus admitted to forcing the teenager to work on the streets and advertising her on the internet. He also admitted to collecting the money the victim obtained by committing commercial sex acts. KTLA 5 40 Active Shooter Incidents Occurred In 2020, FBI Report Says The FBI has designated 40 shootings in 2020 as active shooter incidents and said that 38 people were killed in the incidents, including one officer, and that 126 people were hurt. The numbers excluded the shooter. The shootings spanned across 19 states, with California seeing the highest total at six. FBI officials released their findings in a recent report his month in an effort to help law enforcement officers, other first responders, corporations, educators and the public understand the incidents to come up with prevention and response methods. The bureau defines an active shooter incident "as one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area." The shooting with the highest number of casualties, one killed and 16 wounded, occurred at 9ine Ultra Lounge in Kansas City, Missouri. On Jan. 19, 2020, a man opened fire on a line of people waiting to get inside 9ine, killing a 25-year-old woman and wounding 15 other people before security guards working at the club shot and killed the gunman. The 40 active shooter incidents were carried out by 42 shooters: 35 of which were male shooters, three were female and four were unspecified. FOX 11 Public Safety News Fire Crews Battle House Fire In Sun Valley Firefighters battled a house fire in the 8800 block of Ilex Avenue in Sun Valley Saturday that threatened other structures in the area, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said. The blaze was reported just after 6 p.m. Stewart said the fire burned down a portion of a converted garage and damaged a vehicle parked in a carport. The house suffered major damage and at least two sides of the converted garage were seriously burned. LAFD sent 76 firefighters to the scene who were able to extinguish the flames in just under an hour. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire, along with how much damage it’s done is not yet known. CBS 2 In Troubling Spike, L.A. County Sees 3,000 New Coronavirus Cases In Three Days Los Angeles County has recorded more than 3,000 new coronavirus cases in three days, part of a troubling rise in cases as viral transmission increases among unvaccinated people. It was the first time since early March that the county reported three consecutive days with more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases. The numbers underscore growing concerns about how the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading among unvaccinated people. Officials have said those who have received vaccinations have an excellent chance of being protected. Of 4.67 million L.A. County residents who have been fully vaccinated, only 0.06% have subsequently tested positive for the coronavirus, 0.004% have been hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.0004% have died. Data from Britain cited last week by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious-diseases expert, say that the two-dose course of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 96% effective in preventing hospitalization from COVID-19, 88% effective in preventing symptomatic infection and 79% effective in preventing lab-confirmed infection. Los Angeles Times California DPH Announces First West Nile Virus Death Of 2021 California on Friday reported the state's first death from the West Nile virus this year. A resident of San Luis Obispo County died from complications of the mosquito-born virus, the California Department of Public Health said in a news release. It didn't say when the person died or provide other details. "Hot temperatures this month are contributing to increasing numbers of mosquitoes and the increased risk of virus transmission to humans," the department said. There have been more than 300 deaths from West Nile virus in California since 2003, the department said. It appeared that the person was infected while traveling outside the county to an area where virus-infected mosquitoes are endemic, the county's Public Health Department said. Most people infected with West Nile don't have any symptoms, while about 1 in 5 have flu-like symptoms and fewer than 1% of people develop serious neurological problems such as encephalitis or meningitis, health officials said. People age 50 or older and those with diabetes or hypertension are at higher risk of getting sick and developing complications, authorities said. More than twice as many acres burned in the first six months of this year than during the same period last year — and hundreds more fires, officials said. June saw a series of destructive blazes that swept through rural counties at the northern edge of the state, fueled by a historic Pacific Northwest heat wave. But July is already shaping up to be worse. The Sugar fire had spread to 83,256 acres as of Sunday, making it the largest so far this year in California. Flames swept into the small town of Doyle, destroying homes and other structures. Sparked by lightning in the Plumas National Forest, it forced 3,000 to flee their homes in Plumas and Lassen counties. KTLA 5 Local Government News Nury Martinez In Line To Be Acting LA Mayor If Garcetti Goes To India City Council President Nury Martinez is likely to take over as acting mayor of Los Angeles should Mayor Eric Garcetti be confirmed as the next US ambassador to India. President Joe Biden nominated Garcetti to the post Friday, confirming rumors that have circulated for weeks. Garcetti, who has reached his term limit and cannot seek another four years as mayor, is scheduled to leave office in December 2022, but would vacate the position early if confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The city charter assigns the City Council president, currently Martinez, to serve as acting mayor when the mayor is out of the state. If Garcetti leaves for the diplomatic post, Martinez would become acting mayor until an interim mayor is appointed by the council or a special election is held. The council is unlikely to schedule a special election, however, since the mayoral primary is already set for June 2022. Rumors began in early May that Biden was considering Garcetti for the ambassadorship, but the mayor's office initially said it was speculative and that the mayor was focused on guiding the city through the COVID-19 pandemic. Garcetti served as national co-chair of Biden's presidential campaign. Biden announced his choice of Garcetti Friday, along with nominations for the ambassadorships of Bangladesh, Chile and Monaco.
