Dear friend,
NIRH just released Gaining Ground: 2021 Midyear Report, an analysis of the movement within the states so far this year to advance reproductive rights, health, and justice. With the U.S. Supreme Court’s announcement that it will hear a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, it is clear that we cannot depend on the federal government or the Supreme Court to uphold access to reproductive freedom – we must double down on our efforts in states across the country. In the first half of 2021, 49 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.) introduced 1,014 pieces of proactive legislation to expand reproductive freedom and address many of the racial and economic disparities laid bare by the pandemic. Overall, 85 bills were fully enacted, including 11 bills to protect and expand abortion access.
Against the backdrop of unprecedented threats to reproductive freedom – especially abortion access – NIRH knows that working at the state level to pass proactive laws is our best chance for pushing back and establishing lasting protections. Our report details how states are doing just that. [link removed]
Gaining Ground shows how states are taking up the fight to protect and expand access to reproductive health care in this critical moment.
In solidarity,
