Hi there,
Congress is gearing up to investigate the events of January 6, and Nancy Pelosi has already named 8 members to a select committee of investigators. It's up to Kevin McCarthy to name the next five members, but McCarthy and the GOP are stalling.
McCarthy doesn't want to put Republicans on the committee because he knows they'll look like hypocrites.
How can GOP representatives investigate an insurrection that they proudly incited? How can they claim to support law enforcement and then interview the Capitol Police officers whose lives they callously endangered?
And, of course, McCarthy doesn't want to anger Donald Trump. He'd rather dismiss the investigation as a “witch hunt” than admit that Trump purposely endangered democracy.
The GOP is stuck in a tough position. They can either pretend they never supported the insurrection, angering the one-term president they're so scared of, or show their true colors and publicly stand with the anti-democracy insurrectionists.
The problem is, while McCarthy makes excuses, time is slipping away from us. With each day that goes by, we give extremists the room they need to recruit, recover, and resume their acts of violence.
We wish the GOP was right. We wish this was nothing but a “witch hunt.” We wish we could afford to take things slow. But the forces that incited January's insurrection haven't gone anywhere, and there's no time to lose.
