Here's where things are, John:
A little background: For years, the 1965 Voting Rights Act protected the right to vote for all Americans, with special protections in states with histories of disenfranchising people of color. But as a result of decisions by Supreme Court conservatives in 2013 and last week, the VRA is now significantly weakened.
Justice Elena Kagan:
"The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is an extraordinary law... And few laws are more vital in the current moment. Never has a statute done more to advance the Nation’s highest ideals... Yet in the last decade, this Court has treated no statute worse." |
The Atlantic continued: "Now it’s up to Congress whether to protect democracy" by passing federal voting rights legislation -- and whether they do depends on us, John.
Will you help the NDRC support federal legislation, continue to fight for voting rights in the states, and make sure every American's vote counts equally?
