Jack,
During the last legislative session, our legislature passed and the governor signed into law a bill to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day.
So today, for the very first time, the state of New Mexico celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day.
And it's about time because in New Mexico, and across this country, we all live on native land.
Today is a day to honor and celebrate the cultures of indigenous people, as well as to reflect on our state's history, which for years has ignored the stories, traditions, and cultures of native people.
I'm honored by the opportunities I have had to work with native communities across the state. I'm proud of the work I've done alongside the Native American Voting Taskforce to increase voter registration in Indian Country and to put early voting sites in tribal communities. I look forward to continuing to work, in New Mexico and in Washington, D.C., as an ally to indigenous people and sovereign tribal communities.
But let's remember, there is still much work to do. We need to recognize the land we stand on, strengthen our state's relationship with tribal communities, and ensure indigenous people are heard in all levels of our democracy. From protecting voting rights to fighting for environmental justice and conservation, to ensuring that we remember our shared history, we are at our best when we stand together.
Honoring today as Indigenous Peoples' Day is an important step, but there is still so much work to be done.
Let's go,
Maggie
