On June 22 at the first Senate committee hearing on D.C. statehood since 2014, Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) astutely observed: “This lack of representation for the residents of the city that serves as a beacon of freedom and democracy around the world is a stunning contradiction.”
Not allowing residents of the District of Columbia to have full representation in our federal government is egregiously anti-democratic. Further, because such a large number of D.C.’s residents are Black, it’s yet another way that the Black community is being denied a full voice in our democracy, making it a fundamental issue of racial injustice. We’re fighting to make D.C. statehood a reality, and we need your help to show national support for righting this wrong.
