Joe Biden just took the most significant action any president has taken in generations to confront the menace of corporate monopolies.
In an executive order yesterday, President Biden tasked agencies throughout his administration with helping to level the playing field for consumers, workers, and small businesses.
When implemented, this sweeping action will:
- Lower prices and expand consumer choice by doing everything from banning rip-offs like early termination fees charged by Internet providers to making hearing aids available over-the-counter (which could save individuals with hearing loss thousands of dollars each).
- Ban so-called “non-compete agreements” that prevent workers from pursuing better opportunities (an anti-labor tactic so widespread it is now commonplace even at fast-food companies.)
- Stop cell phone makers and others from locking out independent repair shops.
- Fight the grip that giant technology platforms have on our economy, our elections, and our lives by expressly focusing on monopolistic, anti-consumer mergers and practices within the tech sector.
- Take steps to rein in Big Pharma’s monopolistic price gouging.
A message to leadership throughout the Biden administration:
President Biden’s anti-monopoly executive order is the game-changer everyday Americans have been waiting for. But it’s just a piece of paper until every agency and department gets to work implementing and enforcing its provisions. We call on you to dedicate your office to carrying out the full intent of this measure and at last begin to level the playing field for consumers, workers, and small businesses.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
For progress,

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
