Climate change won’t just impact us in the future, it’s harming us right now.

That’s proven by new findings that show that coral reefs off the southeast coast of Florida are facing annihilation. More frequent cold snaps to the north and water that is becoming too hot to be habitable because of climate change have already severely damaged reefs, and now threaten to eliminate them entirely.

98% of Florida’s original coral is already gone. Reefs are more than just pretty to view, they provide protection against severe weather events (which will only happen more frequently as climate change progresses), support biodiversity, and support industries and jobs in Florida.

Florida’s coral reefs generate $4.4 billion in local sales and support 70,000 jobs. If climate change continues to worsen and coral reefs in Florida are driven to extinction, billions of dollars could be lost along with tens of thousands of jobs, not to mention all the sea life put at risk.

This isn’t a problem unique to Florida. Locations around the world like Japan and China face similar conditions and have already seen much of their coral reefs collapse.

In Japan, 70% of its largest reef is already dead, with 90% experiencing some degree of bleaching. China has seen some of its biggest reefs lose 40% of their coral from a single heat spike.
