While a group of U.S. senators in both parties hammer out details of the "bipartisan infrastructure deal," an explosive report shows how oil giant ExxonMobil plans to taint the process, evade accountability for their past misdeeds and weaken efforts to combat climate change.
These senators must now pledge to return all ExxonMobil donations, and proactively refuse to receive future campaign contributions from the company or its shadow group affiliates.
Keith McCoy—Senior Director of Federal Relations at ExxonMobil—candidly admitted in what he thought was a job interview (but was an undercover sting operation for Greenpeace UK) how the company has targeted a group of influential senators to weaken the infrastructure plan.
He specifically called out 11 senators who have been "crucial" to ExxonMobil: Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, Jon Tester, Maggie Hassan, Chris Coons, and Mark Kelly; and Republican Sens. John Barrasso, John Cornyn, Steve Daines, Marco Rubio, and Shelley Moore Capito. Most of them are now part of the bipartisan gang crafting the deal.

ExxonMobil is worried about plans to raise corporate taxes and invest serious resources to fight climate change. The bipartisan gang has conveniently taken corporate tax increases (and tax increases for the wealthy) off the table, and by considerably shrinking the size of the infrastructure package guarantees that any bipartisan deal will mostly be roads and bridges.
Federal Election Commission data shows that all senators listed above except for Hassan and Kelly received contributions from ExxonMobil. McCoy even went so far as to call Senator Joe Manchin a "kingmaker," and that he meets with Manchin's office on a weekly basis.
Whether or not these senators are doing so willingly, the bipartisan gang is clearly doing the bidding of ExxonMobil. And the explosive report of the company's lobbying practices now undermines the entire credibility of this bipartisan deal. It is not an effort in the public interest to address our infrastructure needs. It is about keeping ExxonMobil happy.
All senators who are part of the bipartisan gang negotiating the infrastructure deal must return all past financial contributions from ExxonMobil, as well as proactively refuse any such financial help in the future from the company or its shadow group affiliates. Their failure to stand up to ExxonMobil raises serious concerns about the deal's credibility.

Our message to the bipartisan gang of U.S. Senators:
I am shocked, disgusted and appalled at ExxonMobil's brazen lobbying efforts to weaken the infrastructure deal—especially opposing tax increases on the wealthy and corporations, and efforts to curb climate change. Because the bipartisan plan appears to serve ExxonMobil's interests, you are unwitting partners—unless you swear off all past and future donations from the oil company.
