Dear John,
Out of the 300 tons of plastic per year that humans produce only nine percent is being recycled. Roughly 150 tons of this plastic is for single use items - like travel-sized toiletry bottles and plastic bags. Eventually these same single use plastics end up in landfills or waterways and overtime break down over into micro-plastics that have been found to pollute our soil, water and even our own bodies.
Simply put, need to decrease our plastic waste and our reliance on plastic products. That's why I am working to introduce legislation that prohibits lodging establishments from offering their guests personal care items in small plastic bottles. The legislation is based on recently enacted California law that has support from major hotel brands. Not only does this legislation prevent significant plastic waste, it helps businesses save money by opting for bulk dispensers of identical personal care products. I have always been committed to protecting our environment and doing it in partnership with businesses. I'm a firm believer that Pennsylvania’s unique and diverse natural lands are worth protecting. Without clean water to drink and air to breathe, little else matters.
