Earlier this month, the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act even further. To be honest, this wasn't unexpected. The conservative-majority Court hasn't been on the side of voting rights in years, and our strategy to end gerrymandering and voter suppression has never depended on one court anyway.
That said, it's more urgent than ever that Congress pass federal legislation to protect our right to vote and to have every vote count equally.
John, if we can't get a federal bill over the finish line, things could get very dire. The Atlantic reports that:
“[If] Congress doesn’t establish new federal standards, the nation is headed toward a two-tier voting system, with red states imposing ever-tightening restrictions that especially burden Democratic-leaning constituencies -- young, minority, and lower-income voters.”
The fact that Republicans are all right with this -- the fact that this is their goal -- is beyond appalling. We have to keep fighting to stop them from achieving it!
