July 2021 SPEAK UP FOR WOLVES! Have you ever thought, "I don't have time"; "I don't know what I can do" or "Others are doing such a good job, wolves don't need me" Wolf advocates, like you, need to speak out - loudly! Even though they are a small minority, those who want to kill wolves speak up in a loud voice. They are vocal at meetings, they speak / write to legislators and often times are on a first-name basis with decision makers. We need to do the same and outshout the "anti-crowd" using scientific data. Can wolves count on you? Together, we created wolf conservation guides to be used by agencies and advocates across the country. Listen to Amaroq Weiss CDB's Senior West Coast Wolf Advocate explain the details. WISCONSIN NEWS A recently released scientific publication demonstrates that the Wisconsin wolf population was reduced by at least 27–33% following the February wolf hunt. In 2020, the population was approximately 1034 and is now estimated to be between 695 and 751. As Wisconsin prepares for another wolf hunt in November, we still do not know spring pup survival. Research suggests that in a typical year, 60-70% of pups do not survive. But, this was not a typical year in Wisconsin as the February hunt took place during peak breeding season. We do not know how many pregnant females were killed or how many females gave birth without the support of pack mates. We do know that Wisconsin DNR failed miserably in the handling of the wolf hunt when hunters killed 218 wolves with a quota of 119. The next meeting of the Natural Resources Board will be August 10/11 2021 when they will decide the kill quota for the November hunt. Will keep you updated as to how to submit comments.
