On Canada Day last week, we celebrated our history, our common heritage and our values as a united people occupying a huge landmass.



But also the many cultures and identities that make us unique in the world and are worth preserving.



The culture of Newfoundland is very different from that of Quebec, Vancouver Island, the Yukon, Alberta, Northern Ontario, or the many First Nations.



These cultures developed here and only exist in our corner of the world.



Their survival is not guaranteed.



Justin Trudeau believes we are a “post-national country” with no particular culture of its own.



Under the policy of official multiculturalism implemented by his father almost 50 years ago, immigrants are not encouraged to integrate into our society, but rather to live in separate communities.



And Trudeau is increasing the number of immigrants to record levels, over 400,000 per year.



This is like adding the population of New Brunswick every two years.



John, as you probably know, the PPC wants to bring immigration down to a lower, sustainable level of 100,000 to 150,000 per year.



It’s not because we are xenophobic.



In addition to economic reasons such as reducing the pressure on housing prices, it’s because we want to preserve our unique cultures and identities.



We don’t want Canada to become a collection of ethnic groups living side by side while replicating the cultures of their countries of origin.



Of course, new Canadians have the right to cherish and maintain their cultural heritage.



But they are not moving into a void. They must be willing to leave some of their life behind, and fully integrate in their new country.



We want them to learn about our history and cultures, master one of our official languages, and adopt widely shared Canadian values.



We want them to partake in our unique human adventure and add their flavour to it.



Canada has always been a diverse country. But constantly pushing for more diversity and more immigration, as all the other parties are doing, will only result in the balkanization of our country.



We must emphasize what unites us, not what divides us.
