John, A new, large-scale study from researchers at UC San Diego provides fresh evidence that menthol smokers have a significantly harder time quitting than non-menthol smokers. This study adds to the overwhelming scientific evidence supporting the FDA’s plan to eliminate menthol cigarettes, which are also more addictive and easier for kids to start smoking. We also know the tobacco industry has intentionally targeted menthol cigarettes at Black Americans, who have a harder time quitting smoking and are more likely to die from tobacco-related diseases like lung cancer, heart disease and stroke. Smokers of menthol cigarettes have a harder time quitting, large new study finds July 6, 2021 "A new study published Tuesday finds that smoking menthol cigarettes versus unflavored cigarettes is associated with reduced success in quitting among people who smoke nearly every day... "Researchers at the University of California, San Diego found that menthol-cigarette smokers — who made up nearly 40% of those in the study — had a significantly harder time quitting than non-menthol smokers. Use of menthol cigarettes prior to attempting to quit decreased the probability of a smoker being able to abstain for more than one month by 28%, and for more than one year by 53%, compared to those who didn’t smoke menthol cigarettes. “This [current study] is the best data we have so far from an observational study,” said Eric Leas, an assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego and first author of the study. “It’s confirming [the FDA’s] choice” to ban menthol."
