Dear Friend,
Amid our busy lives, the news out of Washington these days can feel depressing and overwhelming. It is tempting to feel powerless. The endless stream of opinions, talking heads, and hyper-partisan sound-bites amplifies this. Our team is prayerful and deliberate in what we ask you to respond to, in this world in which every day could result in a call to action.
The president's recent actions, and the ensuing impeachment inquiry, have placed the nation at a perilous crossroad. It is a moment that demands courageous and principled leadership - both from our elected officials and us.
Since we are close to the events in Washington, D.C., we feel it is imperative to share with you our grave concern about the current abuses of power and offer you an opportunity to respond.

Based on what is already publicly known from the rough transcript of the phone call between President Trump and Ukraine's President Zelensky that was released by the White House, it is clear that President Trump abused his office by pressuring a foreign government to investigate his political opponent.
This action constitutes an abuse of power in several ways:
* It threatens our fair elections. We should be able to choose our elected officials free of meddling by foreign governments.
* It compromises our national security, placing the president's personal political interests over the nation's.
* The deflection, lies, and conspiracy theories promulgated by the president's administration and his allies destroy truth's place as a pillar of our democracy.
As people of faith we are called to seek the truth, which Jesus promises will set us free. A fair and thorough impeachment inquiry is needed to uncover the full truth of what has happened, particularly due to the administration's stonewalling of congressional oversight. Whether these offenses are impeachable is a matter of legal and political discernment. However, based on what is already known, we are calling on every member of Congress to publicly denounce the words and actions of the president during this phone call as wrong and an abuse of his office. Anything less puts our democracy in more danger and will lead to further partisan division and lack of accountability.
Take Action

This is a grave test of whether Congress will put country over party, the pursuit of truth over lies, and morality and integrity over short-term political calculations and fear. Please join us in calling on the conscious of Congress.
In Faith,
Rev. Jim Wallis and Rev. Adam Taylor
