The challenges of recent history have only reinforced our commitment to building a better future. More than halfway through 2021, we're excited to support a range of initiatives defined by their creativity, resilience, and optimism: New possibilities to expand access to higher education. Groundbreaking urban innovations from mayors and cities around the world. Public art that mobilizes communities to action. Diverse voices in the fields where our greatest problems will be solved. And more. In this edition of our Impact Newsletter, we're proud to showcase some of the many ways people continue to step up, work together, and improve lives. — Bloomberg Philanthropies As a Global Ambassador for the United Nations Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns, Mike works to mobilize cities, businesses, investors, and the public to fight climate change. Jackson, Mississippi's Public Art Challenge winning project, Fertile Ground, aims to illuminate disparities in food equity through art. The project's new documentary, now available on PBS, highlights the historic system of segregation that led to food access challenges. It also spotlights the city's creative approaches and the people working together to create a culture of healthier food options. Mike and the judges for this year's Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge explain what went into choosing the 50 Champion Cities, and why urban innovations taking place around the world can address today's — and tomorrow's — biggest challenges. Nick Watson, program lead of CollegePoint, and Angel B. Pérez, CEO of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, wrote for Inside Higher Ed about the importance of virtual advising and why we should expand programs to reach more students. This spring, we launched the Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative at Johns Hopkins University, an effort to address underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and math — or STEM fields. In this episode of our Follow the Data podcast, Damani Piggott, the inaugural associate vice provost for Graduate Diversity and Partnerships at Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, the president of Spelman College, sit with Garnesha Ezediaro of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Greenwood Initiative to discuss the need to support diverse scholars and the importance of pathways for the next generation of leaders in STEM fields.
