The Humane League

Costco got called out on its home turf. Here’s what happened.

After being exposed for extreme animal cruelty, tensions with Costco have steadily simmered since February.

The question I and so many others have is: Why does a giant corporation raking in billions of dollars each year think it’s normal or necessary to treat animals like this? And better yet, how do they think they can continue to get away with it?

Despite months of outreach, Costco continued to dig in its heels. Animal advocates and Costco members across the nation grew tired of the excuses.

Recently, our campaign came to a head as we set our sights on Costco’s hometown of Seattle, Washington.

Contented chicken

Changemakers gathered outside a Costco location to spread awareness about the horrific abuses that chickens endure for the company's profit.

Courageous volunteers descended on Costco’s headquarters with huge stacks of petition signatures (over 124,000, actually!), a mobile billboard circled the streets, banners and posters were plastered across the city, and a gigantic online community of passionate animal advocates helped to amplify the message. Needless to say, we took bold action.

Together, we doubled down to demand better for chickens—and Costco had nowhere to hide. We laid bare this ruthless corporation's inexcusable abuse of animals.

When we band together to fight this cruel system — change for animals is possible.

The fight for animals will march on, and as I reflect on the past few weeks, I come away feeling deeply inspired by you and our entire network of Changemakers.

It’s shown me how empowered, agile, and resilient our movement is. I wholeheartedly thank you for being a part of it, and for continuing to move the needle forward for animals.

Onward and upward!
