Centre for Mental Health news

July 2021

Hello from Sarah!

Dear friends,

It was a delight to be at the
London Liaison and Diversion conference this week and able to share insights with each other beyond the realm of Zoom!

This month we’ve published new research on
addressing inequities in mental health research, the future of prison mental health care (plus a fantastic podcast with Dr Graham Durcan on the subject), and launched #AskHowIAm – a report and campaign with National Voices on the importance of compassionate conversations in health care settings for people with long-term physical conditions.

We’ve also been calling for a network of early support hubs which would provide young people somewhere to go when they first start to struggle with their mental health. Support the
#FundTheHubs campaign by emailing your MP.

We’re thrilled to have launched our
brand new strategy, which sets out our vision of equality in mental health and how we’re going to go about achieving it. To realise our ambitions we need to expand our research team! Could you be our new Children & Young People’s Mental Health Researcher? Apply here.

Take care,

Sarah

Fit for purpose? Addressing inequities in mental health research exacerbated by Covid-19

Covid-19 is widening inequalities in mental health, and major gaps in mental health research mean we don’t have the evidence and information we need to address this. Produced on behalf of the Mental Health Research Group, this report explores the inequities in research funding and production, and sets out ways of tackling them.

The future of prison mental health care in England

Poor mental health is exceptionally common in prison. This review of prison mental health care shares examples of the good and innovative practice happening in England. However, wider change is urgently needed to improve mental health among people in prison. We've shared recommendations for making people safer.

Ask how I am

People who live with long-term physical conditions are twice as likely to have poor mental health as those who do not. But our new research with National Voices finds that they have too few opportunities to ask for help with their mental health. This report calls for a greater focus on compassionate care for people with long-term conditions and shares guidance for health care practitioners.

Alongside the report, we've launched the #AskHowIAm campaign with National Voices to get health care practitioners talking to people living with long-term conditions about their mental health.
Equality in mental health: our strategy
"No health without justice, no quality without equality"

We exist because too many people still don't receive the mental health support they need. We're determined to change this and have set out our strategy for making this happen.
