Huge support for Heidi Crowter’s High Court case ()

Actress Sally Philips (pictured on left) outside the High Court in London this week ()
It was wonderful to see so much positive support and publicity this week surrounding Heidi Crowter and Máire Lea-Wilson’s case before the High Court in London, challenging the UK Government over its discriminatory abortion law that allows abortion up to birth for babies with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Actress Sally Philips (of Bridget Jones's Diary fame) was also present outside the court to show her support for the case. Ms Philips, whose son Olly has Down syndrome, presented the remarkable and highly acclaimed documentary on BBC a few years back called “A World Without Down's Syndrome?”

In another positive development in the UK this week, MPs Diana Johnson and Rupa Huq pulled back from moving their respective amendments to allow abortion up to birth for any reason and to introduce a jail sentence of up to two years for anymore offering support to women outside abortion clinics. It’s clear both MPs realised their amendments were not going to succeed and decided to withdraw them before a vote was taken.

Senator Mullen writes to Stephen Donnelly about Three Year Review of abortion law ()

Senator RĂłnĂĄn Mullen ()
Senator Rónán Mullen has written to the Minister for Health stating that it is incumbent on him as minister to ensure that “the Oireachtas have an opportunity to make suggestions on areas that ought to be included in the research” before the proposed research is commissioned as part of the upcoming Three Year Review of the new abortion law.

Senator Mullen’s letter follows this week’s confirmation that an “independent expert” will be appointed to lead the review. The Department of Health has also confirmed that several meetings on the issue have already taken place with “stakeholder groups” to discuss the review. It’s clear that none of these groups included representatives from the pro-life movement.

Senator Mullen’s letter to the Minister for Health also stated that “members of the Oireachtas are regularly contacted by healthcare professionals and ordinary members of the public with important insights and personal experiences that deserve to be considered as part of the review.”

Senator Mullen said in his letter: “I am calling on you as Minister to ensure, before this research proceeds, that members of the Oireachtas are formally consulted and given an opportunity to put forward suggestions regarding the areas and issues that should form part of it.”

He continued: “I don’t think it would be acceptable to be presented with a report that was too narrow in its scope and which missed the opportunity to provide a thorough overview of the workings of the new law.”

Tomorrow at the PLC Network Webinar, Senator RĂłnĂĄn Mullen will talk about the baby Christopher abortion tragedy involving the National Maternity Hospital and the upcoming Three Year Review of the new abortion law.

Limerick council calls for ‘censorship zones’ despite hospital group confirming it received no complaints from public ()
[link removed]
Limerick City and County Council have called on the Minister for Health to introduce censorship zone legislation to ban peaceful pro-life protests or prayer gatherings in the vicinity of abortion facilities.

The council motion went ahead even though a spokesperson for University of Limerick Hospital Group stated on the record that the University Maternity Hospital in Limerick "has not received any complaints from our service users or staff about protests that may be taking place outside our hospital".

Nonetheless, radical pro-abortion campaigners in Limerick have taken to the local and national airwaves to smear pro-life volunteers who have been peacefully and discreetly praying outside local abortion facilities.

Truth as we know counts for little in the current abortion debate, but hopefully common sense will prevail leading to the shelving of the proposed legislation.

The Garda Commissioner has made it clear that the introduction of such legislation is unnecessary and would be a disproportionate response.

Meanwhile, we need to continue to speak up for freedom of speech and assembly and for the right of pro-life volunteers to pray in public and/or peacefully protest the new abortion law.
UK Government to ban boiling lobsters alive out of concern they feel pain, but no proposal forthcoming to give pain relief to unborn babies before late-term abortions ()
[link removed]
Government ministers in Westminster are planning to ban boiling lobsters alive, as part of new legislation that will formally recognise animals as sentient beings that feel pain.

The move by senior government members follows calls from campaigners to amend the Animal Welfare (Sentient) Bill to extend protections to animals other than vertebrates (animals that have a backbone). The Bill is currently making its way through the House of Lords.

Many of the same politicians pushing to strengthen animal welfare rights have strongly opposed attempts to introduce provisions that would ensure unborn babies are administered pain relief prior to late-term abortions.

The folly of what passes for serious politics today and the blanket refusal to acknowledge the humanity of unborn babies in even the smallest way is something we need to awaken people to at every opportunity.

It would be time well spent for pro-life volunteers to each send a quick personal note to our local Oireachtas representatives pointing out this latest development in the UK and calling on them, at a minimum, to support the pain relief amendment currently before the DĂĄil that would ensure no unborn baby is made suffer potentially unbearable pain during a late-term abortion.
Newstalk reading out on air apologies on the morning and afternoon of June 24th referencing the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland's rulings and the fact that both presenters expressed partisan views on abortion. (#1)
[link removed]

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland partially upheld two complaints against Newstalk for their ongoing biased coverage of the abortion issue.

The BAI decision relates to two separate interviews conducted on the same day (10th December 2020) on Newstalk’s Breakfast presented by Ciara Kelly and the Hard Shoulder presented by Mark Cagney.

Newstalk was forced to read out on air apologies on the morning and afternoon of June 24th referencing the BAI rulings and the fact that both presenters expressed partisan views on abortion.
This is a great start in holding our major media platforms accountable for its glaringly one-sided coverage of the abortion issue.

Please get involved in the "Stop The Media Bias" campaign by sending an E-Card to RTÉ here ([link removed]) to holding our national broadcaster more accountable on the abortion issue.
