Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

Our month-long rotational Shaping the Past poster installation at The Corner has ended. Many thanks to our partners at Whitman-Walker for their cooperation; especially Paula Castro Martinez, Sol Mutisya, and Ruth Noack! We featured the work of three Shaping the Past fellows throughout the month of June, but there are many more fellows from across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Germany – check out all of their, posters designed by DC-based firm Studio Aorta, at our digital exhibition.

This Sunday, our colleagues at the German Film Office and Goethe-Institut in New York City present a film salon discussion on Maren Ade's Toni Erdmann. View the film on your platform of choice, then join the conversation at 2:00pm EDT on July 11.

Throughout this new age of virtual screening platforms, you've probably watched film programming on Vimeo, Eventive, Shift72, and Festival Scope by now! Our colleagues at the Goethe-Institut headquarters in Munich are excited to present Goethe-On-Demand, a streaming platform for hosting Goethe-presented film screenings. The Goethe-Institut presents Signs of Resistance, a series of 14 documentaries from four decades on civil society engagement, protest and emancipation movements, the culture of remembrance, migration, and environmental issues. Watch the entire film series free of charge at Goethe-On-Demand now.

Shaping the Past: Digital Exhibition

Many thanks to everybody who visited our poster installation on the corner of 14th & R Streets, presented in collaboration with our partners at The Corner at Whitman-Walker. Now that the month of June is over, the poster exhibition has ended in Washington for the summer. However, the work of all Shaping the Past fellows is available to view digitally. Check out the projects of fellows from across North America and Germany on our web dossier!

KINO! Film Salon: Toni Erdmann

KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online film club to discuss German film. Watch the film independently, then come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German film.

Next up: Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade, which is available to stream in the U.S. on platforms including Mubi and Prime Video. In this audacious twist on the screwball comedy, an aging-hippie prankster father visits his corporate-ladder-climbing daughter in an attempt to rekindle their relationship.
