In the last couple of weeks, we witnessed the devastation of another record-breaking heat wave -- at least 30 heat-related deaths were reported in Washington state alone, while our roads buckled and cracked from the heat.
As 93% of the West Coast continues to endure this historic drought, we have dry conditions primed for wildfires and continued heat-related damage.
Meanwhile, this year's hurricane season is already outpacing 2020. Hurricane Elsa is the earliest an “E” named storm has ever formed in the Atlantic.
One thing is clear: We need to stop talking about extreme weather events as “once-in-a-generation.” The devastating effects of climate change are already here -- and they'll continue to worsen if we don't act.
Climate action isn't just about the environment, it's also about protecting public health, bolstering our economy by expanding green energy, and strengthening our national security.
There is plenty we can do to combat this crisis and deliver good-paying jobs in the process. The recently proposed jobs plan will help us transition to a green economy and invest in climate-resilient infrastructure that will secure our future for generations to come.
