Friend,
You probably haven't heard of Keith McCoy. You almost certainly haven't met him. But a lot of U.S. senators have been spending a lot of time with McCoy, a longtime lobbyist for ExxonMobil. Just last week, Greenpeace UK released a video of him bragging about how he's been successfully influencing key senators to remove climate from the infrastructure bill, in order to protect Exxon's bottom line.
This is nothing new. Big Polluters spend billions to make sure the government looks out for them, rather than for the American people. And thanks to this big-dollar lobbying, these fossil fuel corporations (like Exxon) receive hundreds of billions of dollars a year in subsidies from the government.
Yep, that's right: Taxpayers like you and me directly pay fossil fuel corporations to keep polluting our communities and to worsen the climate crisis. (Go ahead, let's say it loudly and together: "WTF?!")
As heatwaves, fires, and droughts devastate communities around the country, the last thing we should be doing is giving handouts to corporations fueling the climate crisis.
So today, we're calling on Democrats in Congress to pass a budget reconciliation bill that ends fossil fuel corporations' federal subsidies once and for all. Add your name right now to make this demand with us!
Subsidies to ExxonMobil and other fossil fuel corporations actually push unprofitable projects into profitability, giving them more money to expand their operations, to pollute more, to help fuel more climate catastrophes, and even to employ more lobbyists like Keith.
We're paying for it with our tax dollars, yes, but also with our health, our future, and our lives.
There is good news, though. Congress has the authority to stop it all. And once they do, they can instead put that money where it belongs: toward ending the climate crisis by funding clean energy projects and programs to support workers transitioning out of the fossil fuel industry.
You see the urgency—and the opportunity. Add your name right now to join our call for Democrats in Congress to stop giving ExxonMobil and other Big Polluters hundreds of billions of dollars a year in federal subsidies.
Thanks,
Becca Ellison
