Last week, the Supreme Court dealt another blow to voting rights in America.
The Court's ruling in Brnovich v. DNC is the culmination of Republican efforts to use the judicial branch as their biggest voter suppression tool.
What is most terrifying about the 6-3 ultra-conservative majority is that it only took them a few months to unravel the Voting Rights Act. This ruling shows how The Court will continue to be the single most important tool for the Republican war on democracy.
By doing away with key protections that the Voting Rights Act provides, the Supreme Court opened the door for states to freely restrict voting rights for Black and Brown voters.
With this Republican majority on the Court, there is no end to the damage they can do to all of the issues we have fought so hard for.
We have to fight power with power by expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court. Stand with DFA as we pressure congressional leaders to pass the Judiciary Act and expand the Supreme Court NOW.
This ultra-conservative Court is already undoing decades of progress and will continue to shift the balance of power to Republicans as the GOP passes more and more voter suppression laws in state after state.
When it comes to ensuring that they control the judicial system, Republicans do not hesitate to act.
Despite losing the popular vote in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections, Republicans have nominated 15 of the last 19 justices on the Supreme Court.
That is not by accident.
In 2016 Mitch McConnell and Republicans refused to even hold a hearing for Obama's nominee, but then in 2020 with just over a week remaining until a presidential election, they confirmed a radical right-wing judge onto the Court. These were politically calculated decisions made to lock in radical right-wing priorities for a generation.
