Alessandra Biaggi - Democrat for State Senate

Friends -

On Tuesday night, the New York City Board of Elections finally released results from the June 22 primary. I’d like to share some of my thoughts on the outcomes, and have an honest conversation with you about where we go from here.

First, let’s look at the big picture. The upcoming New York City Council will have more women, more people of color, and more progressive members than any prior session, and that’s a huge victory in and of itself.

I’m thrilled that progressive candidates won some hard-fought victories up and down the ballot. This includes some candidates whom I endorsed and campaigned for, including:

I’m thrilled for Brad, Marjorie, Amanda, and Crystal, and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish in city government.

Running for office is tiring and difficult, and many progressive candidates face crowded primaries and well-funded opponents. I’m so proud of my friends Mino Lora, Ischia Bravo, Johanna Garcia, Elizabeth Adams, Marti Cummings, and Brad Hoylman, who shared important, thoughtful policy proposals with the people of New York throughout their campaigns. I know that they will continue to organize in their communities to see these ideas come to fruition.

Now, I know that many progressive New Yorkers feel ambivalent about Eric Adams winning the Democratic nomination for mayor.

As the (presumptive) next mayor of our city, Eric has the opportunity to make great progress on key issues including education, climate justice, transportation, and housing affordability. I look forward to working alongside him when we can find common ground, but I also plan to challenge him on issues where we disagree. After all, that’s how we will build a better city for everyone.

I will continue to work hard on your behalf in the State Senate, and I’m truly looking forward to having new partners in the fight for a better New York in city government.

Because while it’s important to elect candidates who share our progressive vision, it’s even more important to hold elected officials accountable to ensure that they’re doing all they can to truly represent the people who elected them.

Thank you for reading,
Alessandra

A note from Team AB: we’re going live with our new campaign website in a few weeks!

Right now, we have a slight gap in our fundraising which we’ll need to close to put the finishing touches on the site.

So if you’re able, please pitch in $3 — or whatever you can afford — to help us fund the website. Any amount you can give will go a long way.
