Dear Team Nika,
It's wonderful to be present to the summer coming alive!!! This time last year, the nation was in turmoil and uncertainty was a pandemic unto itself! We are all still healing, but this year I feel especially blessed to enjoy the sun and bikes and fresh air and work!!
27 Team Nika bills are moving through the system. I'm especially stoked about our 9 Housing bills and 10 bills to promote Civil Rights & Equity. I've been expanding my legislative work in Labor & Economic Justice (LEJ), with 5 new bills in that area.
A number of my colleagues have brought me on as a co-filer to key LEJ bills like Establishing a State Public Bank or Decriminalizing Debt. With mentoring from these colleagues and from advocates like the Women's Bar Association and the ACLU, I'm absorbing new strategies for dismantling structural inequity in the law.
Testifying in favor of a Public Bank with Co-filers Rep Mike Connolly and Senator Jamie Eldridge
I'm still catching up on cosponsorships, but, thanks to your commitment to informing me of what matters to you, I've currently cosponsored 191 bills ranging from housing to environmental justice to healthcare to economic development.
One of our top cosponsorship priorities last month (it was heard on June 23rd) is H3456, Rep Farley-Bouvier's and Rep Barber's Work & Family Mobility Act. It enables all residents of age to obtain a driver's license, regardless of immigration status. If you live in Massachusetts, email Chairman Straus to advocate that Massachusetts ensure transportation justice and public safety for ALL!
Soon, I’ll update you on the budget, Department of Correction, and other in-House matters. I love our partnership. Thank you for all you do. I hope you'll chip in today and continue to help advance Team Nika's work in the State House and in the community!
Cheers and love,
Rep Nika
