Jack, the Biden administration’s moratorium on the federal death penalty is a start, but Biden must take it one step further in order to keep his promises.

Biden previously vowed to end the death penalty. While the moratorium is a step in the right direction, it does nothing to solve the issue. In fact, a previous moratorium was lifted by Trump and then-Attorney General Bill Barr, resulting in the executions of 13 people to score political points with Trump’s base.

We can't take the chance of the next president lifting the moratorium to use state-sanctioned murder for political purposes. President Biden must set a moral example.

P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier urging Biden to commute the sentences of people on federal death row:

Jack, on July 1, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a moratorium on federal executions.

However, the Biden administration is still seeking and defending the use of capital punishment. If they're successful, they could end up increasing the number of people with death sentences. The moratorium is a good and welcome move. But it's not enough.

The Justice Department also committed to reviewing its policies and procedures to ensure that everyone is afforded their Constitutional rights and are treated fairly and humanely, noting that obligation "has special force in capital cases."

Prosecutorial misconduct, bias, unreliable jailhouse informants, junk science, grievous mistakes by defense counsel and more create a grave risk of wrongful convictions and sentences. For these reasons and more, Biden sharply criticized Trump for resuming executions, tweeting “Because we can’t ensure that we get these cases right every time, we must eliminate the death penalty.”

Before the Trump administration, the federal government had a 17 year moratorium on capital punishment. But Trump and then-Attorney General Bill Barr saw an opportunity to score political points and went on a months-long killing spree that resulted in the executions of 13 people.

We can't take the chance of a future president using state sanctioned murder for political purposes. President Biden must set a moral example by issuing an executive order commuting sentences of everyone on federal death row.

Clearing federal death row is the best way to ensure that the U.S. government does not risk the irreversible horror of executing innocent people. Urge President Biden to commute the sentences of people on federal death row.
