Dear Friend, |
The Environmental Protection Agency is first and foremost a public health agency — an agency that, at its best, holds polluters accountable and enforces our most fundamental laws for safeguarding clean air and clean water. This mission was largely abandoned during the Trump administration, as Trump’s cronies worked hard to make sure polluters could poison the public with impunity. |
But under a new administration, the EPA is taking on the daunting task of undoing Trump’s damage, which will require extensive processes that could stretch on for years. And as we’ve said many times, merely getting back to where we were during the Obama years is not good enough. The people drinking lead-contaminated water, living next to chemical plants, and being exposed to methane pollution deserve stronger protections in the shortest amount of time possible. |
The good news is the EPA’s work doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When we organize to flood the regulatory comment periods with support for strong regulations, EPA staffers listen and can change the agency’s plans. This type of activism is not glamorous, but it makes a difference — and it’s critical in the fight for healthy communities and a livable climate. I hope you’ll consider taking action on the alerts below to call on the EPA to enact strong protections as fast as possible. |

Demand strong protections against chemical disasters |
Over 100 times per year, facilities using or storing toxic chemicals catch fire, explode, or release hazardous substances into the air. Exposure to these chemicals can cause immediate death or injury, reproductive, developmental, and respiratory damage, along with cancer and other harm to the nervous, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems. 177 million people (half the United States population) live close enough to facilities that could, at any moment, have a disaster and damage their health irreparably. The EPA must take action to prevent further chemical disasters. |
