Welcome to Thursday, July 8th, crows and ravens...
Search efforts at a Surfside, Florida, condo that collapsed June 24 have shifted from rescue to recovery.
“Our sole responsibility at this point is to bring closure,” said Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah.
Fifty-four people are now confirmed dead in the Champlain Towers South Condo collapse with 90 people still unaccounted for, though officials warned there is "no livable space left."
Jadallah told the families at a private briefing Wednesday that search teams would remove rescue dogs and sound devices but continue to dig through the rubble for the bodies of victims.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said at a news conference Wednesday that it remains unclear whether structural flaws in the condo were unique to the building, its construction, or its maintenance.
While experts have argued the collapse reveals inadequacies in the certification process and need for statewide condo checks, DeSantis said he wouldn't commit to actions on the state level as condominiums are “kind of a dime a dozen, particularly in southern Florida” and that the collapsed Champlain Towers South “had problems from the start."
