As you may know, Governor Dunleavy issued his line-item vetoes on July 1st and made them available on July 2nd.
Below, is more information regarding the Governor's vetoes. If you'd like specific information regarding line-item vetoes, click here!
How much was vetoed and from where:
- $2 million cuts to the Alaska Legislature’s FY 22 budget. (Per diem money)
• $2.7 million veto of money set aside for public broadcasting.
• Cut all funding for the statewide Online Library System.
• $3.4 million cut for the Alaska Tribal Child Welfare Compact.
• $1.2 million cut to public health nursing.
• $12.5 million cut for upgrades to the Alaska Vocational Technical Center in Seward.
• $2.5 million cut in pre-K grants.
• $3 million in federal funds for Alaska Seafood Marketing was vetoed
• $3.5 million in federal funds for hospitals treating Medicaid was vetoed
• $8.4 million for multi-year Marine Highway funding was vetoed
• $462,700 in funds for oil spill response, mostly paid by the oil industry, was vetoed.
- $308,000 for Real ID Implementation in Rural communities was vetoes
• $13.2 million for the Long Trail from Fairbanks to Seward was reduced to zero.
• $21.6 million for School Major Maintenance was vetoed
• $400,000 Alaska Legal Services was vetoed
• $17.5 million for Medicaid was vetoed
• $221,000 for industry Tax Investigators was vetoed
• $10 million cut in funding for the Alaska Travel Industry Association.
Not vetoed:
- $4 Billion transfer of money from the Earnings Reserve Account (ERA) to the Permanent Fund (PF).
- This prevents the $4 billion from being spent. The Fund will now earn nearly $200 million more every year forever. The Governor meant to veto the $4 billion but it was missed.
Impact of vetoes:
- Education
- No forward funding to provide continuity of education operations.
- Medicaid
- The Legislature reduced funding to the program by $17 million. The Governor vetoed another #17 million.
- Office of Children Services
- Additional funds to the agency would've allowed for pay increases.
- REAL ID for rural communities
- This has been a long battle with no resolve. It's clear that the various communities need additional funding to issue REAL IDs.
