Denver Swings for the Fences to Fight Homelessness, Add Housing

Westword

"The first thing that jumps out is that the City of Denver is making investments in homelessness unlike it ever has," says Cathy Alderman of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, after looking over 2021 budget information regarding housing and homelessness spending that the city provided to Westword.

Denver earmarked around $91 million for housing and homelessness in its 2021 budget. That figure does not include over $100 million that the city has spent on housing and homelessness over the course of the pandemic using federal COVID-19 relief money, or the nearly $50 million that it has received as part of the American Rescue Plan Act's Emergency Rental Assistance Funds. The city still expects to spend tens of millions of dollars more on housing and homelessness using additional relief money.

Remember -- Colorado Republicans like Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn all voted 'No' to helping Colorado families.

Meanwhile, all of Colorado's Democratic members of the Congressional delegation voted 'Yes'!

But how else does the American Rescue Plan specifically help Coloradans, you ask? Click the link to find out!

Volunteer of the Week

Meet Victor -- our new Intern for the Colorado Democratic Party! Victor is a student at Cornell and attends the School of Industrial and Labor Relations!

What motivates you to volunteer with Democratic causes?

I decided to become an intern for the Colorado Democratic party because I wanted to see more Latinx voices, like mine, involved in local politics. As a college student, much of the past few years have been spent trying to figure out my voice—my values, my politics, my beliefs. I would now like to use my voice to shape policy for my community, and help others discover their own ways to express themselves, too.

Want to volunteer and help elect Democrats across Colorado? Click the button below to join our talent bank, and we'll get you plugged in!
