Friends,
I want to talk to you about a topic that still weighs heavy on my heart. It’s been over a year since the death of George Floyd, and that loss of life and the subsequent calls for justice that followed are still echoing.
In March, I voted to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act -- a transformative piece of legislation that would build up trust between communities and law enforcement by taking bold steps to combat police brutality.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act would be a historic piece of legislation that would:
- Ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants
- Hold police accountable in court and end qualified immunity
- Improve investigations of police conduct and collect data on misconduct
- Invest in community-based public safety options
Will you sign on in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act?
The Chauvin verdict in April signaled the beginning of the accountability that so many have called for over the past year. But, accountability for one doesn’t equal justice for all.
We can’t stop now -- not with so many people still waiting for the bold, systematic changes that were promised to them. We owe it to George Floyd, his family, and his legacy to pass legislation that will ensure that the people who are charged with protecting us are held accountable.
