Friend,
As Rashida fights back against racist policies that, for generations, have oppressed Black and brown communities, she’s facing unrelenting attacks by Republicans who want to maintain an unjust status quo.
Last night, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig addressed a crowd celebrating the 167th anniversary of the Republican Party. In his first political speech since his retirement, and as he prepares for a run for political office, Craig singled out Rashida and our movement for justice and equity. He’s seeking to rally right-wing Republicans against all that we’re fighting for, while touting his support for Donald Trump.
While Rashida has a proven track record of fighting racial inequities, former Chief Craig’s “tough on crime” stance failed to keep Detroit safe―instead over-criminalizing Black and brown people in majority-Black Detroit.
Rashida has introduced bills to increase affordable housing, reinvest in marginalized communities, end mass incarceration, lift people out of poverty, stop racist facial recognition surveillance, bring about environmental justice, end the modern-day redlining of the auto insurance industry, and more.
On Chief Craig’s watch, Detroit Police violently attacked Black Lives Matter protesters, media, and legal observers during protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and even took BLM protesters to court in an unsuccessful attempt to intimidate our movement for change.
As Rashida fights for us, let’s show Rashida that we have her back. Donate today to fight back against these relentless attacks.
While Chief Craig was at the helm, Rashida called out the Detroit Police Department’s abuses of power, the inflation of Detroit’s police budget, and implementation of racist surveillance technology that’s led to false arrests.
Rashida will not stop fighting for her residents and marginalized people everywhere. Thank you for all that you do in our shared struggle for justice and equity.
