When I was just 19 years old, I experienced a racial profiling incident that changed my life forever — and inspired my career in law enforcement and racial justice.

May 1985 — I had just dropped my grandparents off at their home in Newark, New Jersey, when a vehicle pulled up in front of me, blocking my path.

Three men with guns got out. I threw my car into reverse, then one of them opened fire and barely missed me — piercing the driver's side door.

I fought for my life as the men beat and then handcuffed me. This was no carjacking incident — these were undercover police officers mistaking me for another suspect.

I knew something had to change.

I am a Black man who became a law enforcement officer, prosecutor, and now, civil rights attorney. I dedicated my career to creating the change I want to see – and that's why I'm running for Congress.

My story is just one of many examples that Black and brown communities face every day. It’s clear now more than ever, we need leaders in law enforcement to speak out against abuse of power. I am not your typical candidate for federal office. I speak from experience. I’ve seen first-hand where our communities struggle, and I’ll make sure our struggles are heard in Congress.

That’s why I am ready to propose real, meaningful solutions like national block-grants and training programs. I am ready to develop laws and offer supplemental workforce funding to mandate police departments to rout out the worst among us.
