Dear John,

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just picked a new governor general and we need your help to make sure the platinum-platted perks are reined in.

Your tax dollars are paying for outrageous governor general perks.

For example, former governor general Julie Payette could still pocket $4.8 million if she receives her pension to age 90, even though she only served for a little more than three years.

That’s because under the current system, governors general receive a pension of about $150,000 per year. And they are eligible for the full pension regardless of how long they serve in the role and start collecting it immediately upon leaving the position.

Former governors general can also expense taxpayers for more than $200,000 ([link removed]) every year for the rest of their lives and even up to six months after they die.

Do you think it’s fair for your tax dollars to pay for these crazy perks?

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Trudeau and the newly appointed Governor General Mary Simon to fix these perks. We need your help to show them that taxpayers demand change.

Could you please take a few minutes to sign the online petition calling for the government to rein in the platinum-plated governor general perks? Just click this link: [link removed] ([link removed])

The CTF calculated ([link removed]) the cost of the governor general pensions, and they’re mind boggling. The five former and living governors general will receive more than $18 million if they collect the pension to age 90.

The salary for the governor general is also more than $300,000.

Rideau Hall needs to re-establish trust with Canadians and a good first step would be to reform these unfair perks.

Thanks for standing up for taxpayers – it’s making a difference!

Sincerely,

- Franco, Shannon, Todd and the rest of the CTF team.
