Employment opportunities, resources to understand  trafficking with more nuance, and a 3-year strategic plan! All here in your inbox.

THIS MONTH AT

Love146 is guided by our mission and vision, but you may be wondering: sure, but what’s the plan? We’ve got the answer here in our 3-year strategic plan. If you’re ready to nerd out in the nuts & bolts of our work, look over this document to get a feel for where we’re focusing our efforts over the next 3 years – and why.

We’re excited to share about a new program at Love146: our Employment & Education program! This work focuses on supporting survivors moving forward from our US Survivor Care. This program is not just vocational support experts — but it’s also folks who are trauma-informed and can respond to the needs of child trafficking victims in particular. Our E&E workers know that any perception of “selling a dream” can be triggering for survivors. They know that a conversation about building a resume shouldn’t start with questions like “How have you earned money in the past?” Love146 never closes a case. Our Survivor Care staff stay by, journeying alongside youth through a variety of things following their exploitation, but when youth struggle to thrive economically, they’re vulnerable to revictimization. These E&E staff members will be able to support specific youth pushing towards their long-term potential.

For years, there are specific measures we’ve been fighting to see in Connecticut for youth in our Survivor Care. And last month, we saw victory as HB6657 passed through the Connecticut House UNANIMOUSLY and through the Senate with…only one objection. 🤔 This is such important progress! 🎉 This bill on the table was informed by the real issues and lack of justice we’re seeing survivors facing – and its passing will makes a big difference in the lives of children in Love146’s Survivor Care.

Do you hate child trafficking? Do you approach life as a listener & learner? Do you love to collaborate & work with a diverse group of people towards a common goal? Do you laugh a whole lot? We currently have several open positions in Connecticut, including several Survivor Care Social Workers.

In June, our Director of Communications, Marilyn Murray, joined a panel with leaders from the NAACP & the Anti-Defamation League to discuss the Evolution of Language in Effective Nonprofit Storytelling. The live chat lit up during the panel as Marilyn shared, “In the role of working in marketing and communications, your language can deliver vicarious trauma to tens of thousands of people in a minute – or, you can deliver vicarious hope and healing. We can bring folks storytelling that helps them, not harms them.” You can still watch a recording of the whole panel if you register for the Classy Collaborative conference.

LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately harmed by issues like homelessness, suicide, and human trafficking. Learn more about how this happens, and what you can do to protect children.

A public health approach to human trafficking requires a nuanced understanding of its root causes. Last month a book exploring this topic was released entitled, “The Historical Roots of Human Trafficking.” Inside this book, you’ll find a chapter written by program leaders at Love146, Erin Williamson & Aria Flood. This chapter is focused on the systemic and structural roots of child sex trafficking, and specifically the role of gender, race, and sexual orientation in disproportionate victimization.

A month ago, we gathered at the Emerge event. And by the end of the event, combined with Tread on Trafficking efforts, we saw more than $135,000 raised. It was a phenomenal evening, and we even shared more about some new work at Love146! Weren’t able to make it?
