SCOTUS recently issued its final decisions of the term, including a ruling striking down California’s requirement that tax-exempt organizations disclose the identity of their donors.

The state contended that this information helps police misconduct by tax-exempt groups, while the charities that were party to the case argued that the lack of confidentiality chilled contributions by donors due to the risk of reprisals.

Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the majority opinion, which was joined in full by Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Samuel Alito, and Justice Neil Gorsuch agreed with the judgment but didn’t join all of Roberts’s opinion.

** Economy Adds 850K Jobs in June

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday released its jobs report for June 2021, which found the U.S. economy added 850,000 jobs and the unemployment increased by 0.1 percentage point to 5.9%.

The BLS said that the gains occurred as “pandemic-related restrictions continued to ease in some parts of the country.”

The June jobs numbers exceeded the Dow Jones forecast of 706,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate was higher than economists’ forecasted 5.6% unemployment rate.

** California Sets Date for Gov. Newsom Recall
------------------------------------------------------------

California’s secretary of state recently announced that the election to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will occur on Tuesday, September 14th.

Newsom has faced criticism over his handling of California’s pandemic response. The lockdowns he ordered have caused the state to have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country ([link removed]) , and California’s K-12 public schools have one of the lowest percentages of students who have returned to in-person learning among any of the 50 states.

When voters cast their ballot in a California recall election they’re asked to weigh in on two questions: whether the politician should be recalled from office, and who should succeed them if they’re recalled.
