Pride Month for most people may have ended, but in San Diego, it's just starting. As the proud sister of two LGBTQ+ siblings and the proud representative of Hillcrest, the heart of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community, I’m grateful for an extra month to mark Pride and everything it represents.
Pride is a celebration and a protest — a month (or two) dedicated to love, equality, the LGBTQ+ activists who forged the path before us, and a reminder of all the important work we have left to do. We’ve come so far, but we still have a long way to go to ensure full and equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
In Congress, I’m fighting for all of our siblings to have equal protection under the law. I’m especially proud to be an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, a bill that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation in housing, employment, education, credit, the jury system, and more.
I’m so grateful that the House made the Equality Act a priority this year. In February, we passed this landmark piece of legislation with bipartisan support. Now, all eyes are on the Senate. If the Equality Act passes there, President Biden has promised to sign it into law.
We need to send a unified message to the Senate — that the LGBTQ+ community deserves equal rights and dignity under the law, and the time to act is now. Will you add your name today to show your support for the Equality Act?
