It has been exactly six months since the deadly January 6 attack — the most destructive attack on the U.S. Capitol since the War of 1812. My team sent you an email in the wake of that assault, and I’ve included it at the end of my note today so we can remember what that moment was like.
But we have to remember that this was not just a deadly attack on the Capitol, it was a direct attack on our democracy. The people that stormed the Capitol — incited by Donald Trump — were trying to overturn the election results. They were trying to deny the will of the people.
Six months later, we must do everything we can to protect our democracy. But if Senate Democrats don’t act now to end the filibuster and pass the For The People Act, our democracy is at even greater risk.
Mitch McConnell and the GOP are blocking any effort to strengthen voting rights and fully investigate the January 6 attack. At the same time, dangerous voter suppression laws are being passed across the country to block the vote and the voice of the people. The integrity of the 2022 and 2024 elections are on the line.
Without immediate action on voting rights, democracy is at serious risk. That’s why I’m leading the fight to end the filibuster and protect our democracy — and it’s why I’m redoubling those efforts today as we remember what happened to our country exactly six months ago.

Yesterday was a dark day in our country's history.
Emboldened and incited by Donald Trump, domestic terrorists launched the most violent assault on the U.S. Capitol since the War of 1812 in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election and attack our democracy. Four lives were lost.
Pramila and all of us at Team Jayapal are safe. But we're clear-eyed and undeterred about the work ahead.
Yesterday evening, Pramila quickly called on Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to immediately remove Donald Trump by invoking the 25th Amendment. Today, she called on Congress to urgently reconvene and signed on to once again impeach this president.
With 13 days to go until inauguration day, we'll undoubtedly be told these fights are in vain. We'll be told to just let it go. But we can't. And if enough of us join the call to hold Trump fully accountable right now, our demands will be impossible to ignore. Pramila led the fight to impeach Trump in 2019 because it was clear he had abused the power of his office by trying to coerce a foreign government to interfere in our elections. "We take our power and collectively, through our elections, we entrust it to a President who must always act in OUR interest — not their own." These words still hold true today.
In November, voters chose compassion, truth, and science over cruelty, fear, and lies. Our leaders should respect the will of the people — not a small group of domestic terrorists in pursuit of a coup against our democracy.
No more excuses. Donald Trump has to go — and we will hold him accountable.
